I was affected by bushfires in the Greater Blue Mountains area on the 18th of October 2013. We only barely had time to pack a few major belongings and flee to safety. The fire was already raging with homes burning in our pathway to exit. I am in a wheelchair, which made life difficult and slow for me to escape the danger. In our haste, my wheelchair missed the edge of the drive, spilling me into the garden bed. Fortunately a fire truck was driving past and they ran to our aid. After being lifted into the car, my husband drove towards Richmond, which was the only exit out of Winmalee. It was a very harrowing & frightful experience and we were forced to stay away from our home for three nights.
